While running from meeting to meeting in the Schuman district in Brussels I stumbled on this work in progress – and photographed it, of course, as I always do when I come across moments that are full of significance.
The sheer symbolism of this moment stuck with me. It struck me as a reminder:
The Future is Europe – but Europe is, itself, a never ending work in progress.
Its very reason to exist is that the (now) 28 member States decided to work together on their mutual interests. Sometimes it goes on better than others – and this is the reason why this transnational commitment demands so much conjoint work. And compromising. And trying to understand each other’s views while finding their mutual interests.
